Memorial Scholarship

The dream of establishing a nursing scholarship in memory of April has grown to founding The April Gillespie Fund for Pediatric Nursing Excellence.  This is now a registered non-profit organization, approved by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity.  I am very excited about this venture.  I know April would be proud to help her colleagues advance their nursing careers. She was so much of an inspiration and a role model to those who worked with her.

April believed strongly in continuing education and was looking forward to working on an advanced nursing degree. The scholarship fund will support further educational opportunities for pediatric hematology-oncology nurses in the Metroplex, helping them provide the best possible care to children with cancer.

April also had a keen interest in international outreach. She had visited hospitals in Mexico and met with the nurses there. She was very concerned about the lack of educational opportunities she observed. The nurses had almost no specialized training and were eager to learn, but lack of resources blocked their dreams. In the long term, the scholarship fund will also aim to sponsor pediatric hematology-oncology nurses in Mexico, covering all expenses for them to attend a comprehensive, month-long specialized training program. This will give them an opportunity that is unprecedented in their home country. Again, the ultimate result will be better care for children with cancer.
